Enso is great!! One of the best sushi places in town. The only problem I have with them is those awful chairs you have to sit in.
I eat sushi often and this was undoubtedly one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like sitting on an unpadded piece of plywood with NO back, being ignored by the sushi "chef", having portions of my order
So glad we went to dinner here! I had the Rock Shrimp salad with Avocado...soooo good. My friend got the Screaming Orgasm, it was delicious ahi tuna with a great sauce. The table shared the Firecracker, Fried Tofu and Dynamite appetizers and those were
I visit Bakersfield on business every few months and usually go to a sushi restaurant at least once. It's convenient for quick business meals, alone or for a meeting.

Never Again
We walked in on a Thursday night and it was busy, but nothing that should have been difficult. We were seated and ordered our drinks and appatizer (Garlic Enamame) from our first waitress. (Yes, we had a few) I saw our first waitress take our appetizer order and instead of going to the kitchen, went back to a big table she was also serving. 15 minutes later we asked a server to please get our waitress. The server left and came back saying she would be taking our order (Waitress #2) We explained we ordered our appetizer a while ago and we hadn't ordered our food, even thou the couple that came in after us was served before we even ordered. Waitress #1 came back, never apologized for not putting in our appetizer order, or for why she just left our table unattended. We also ordered two beers, a heini and a lager. The Heine came out right away, we had to order the lager three more times (From three different servers, including the hostess) before it was actually brought to us. Our Appetizer was brought with our meal along with the lager from Waitress #3 who filled our waters. I finished my beer some time before the food and other drink was brought. I wait for the bill, but since Waitress #1 was too busy with another party, I had to go to the front and stand there until the hostess noticed me. I handed her my bill and my card and she just looked at me like I was crazy. I said I wanted to pay my bill and she said "You already did" I wish I would've (and I could have easily) walked out there...but I said no, and told her I had been waiting to pay, that I hadn't paid yet. She left to get a manager looking guy to run my card. He and the hostess kept apologizing for our unattentive server, but didn't get us a different server when we asked for one durring our meal. Of course I didn't leave a tip. It was the horrible service, long wait time for us even thou no one else had to wait. Just because they had a big party, our table of 2 was left unattended. Awful service. Now I know why my roommate always gets his to go.

Being a long time fan of Toro we decided to check out Enso on a Friday night. It was very busy and the top floor seemed to have a great atmosphere and feel, we were seated downstairs on a comfy couch with a low table. Very chic and pretty cozy. Our service was a bit spotty, we had three different people serve us/ask if we needed anything, but after the waitress apologized and told us it was the first night that downstairs was open and they still weren't used to it we understoof and went with the flow. The food was excellent and still came pretty quickly for how crowded it was. The gyoza appetizer was excellent (I believe it was the Gyoza Chip & Dip) and the rolls and bowl we ordered were tasty. Our bill was around $90 for two people, which included 3 beers.
The only bad things I can say about Enso were that a DJ started playing about halfway through our meal, and the downstairs area is just way too tiny for that. It made conversation hard and ruined what had been a good vibe until that point. Also, someone who I assume was a manager (he checked on us once during the meal) seemed more interesed in the 3 younger girls seated next to us than how the restaurant was being run. He would bring food down and leave it on the bar for others to deliver and go sit and flirt rather than finding out who the food belonged to. And since there were only four parties seated downstairs it wouldn't have been that hard to figure out where it went.
New edit- We went to Enso on Saturday night (9/18) and our service was way below standard. We had a large party (14) but the dining room was empty except for 2 people sitting at the sushi bar, so it shouldn't have been that difficult to keep our order straight and at least bring us the correct drinks. The server was slow and often seemed confused when we would ask for something. Plus their menu has been cut down. My favorite item, the gyoza chip and dip, is no longer there and there seemed to be several other items missing as well. We will think twice about going back again. It's a shame that this seems to always happen to great places in Bakersfield.

My visit to Enso was my first, and sadly my last. When I went to dine there, there was a total of four customers, including myself. So there was absolutely no excuse for the poor customer service I received. I sat at the sushi bar and the chef did not say one word to me....not even when he served my food. I needed extra sauce, but because the chef was ignoring me, I had to wait for the waitress to come back around. I was charged for food that I ordered, but never received. And even though I clearly was not done with my food, the bill was given to me and I was never checked on after that moment. Come to think of it, I was never even asked if I was done ordering.....so they missed out on me potentially spending more money. In today's struggling economy, most people don't have a lot of money to spend on dining out.....but they do have a lot of restaurants to choose from when they do go out. And restaurants that treat their customers in this manner will never win over those who know the value of their dollar in today's economy and will not settle for anything less than great customer service. I also agree with prior reviews.....the furniture makes the restaurant look cheap and is terribly uncomfortable. I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone. For those who do try it out, I wish you a better experience than what I had.

I eat sushi often and this was undoubtedly one of the worst experiences I have ever had. Maybe it's just me, but I don't like sitting on an unpadded piece of plywood with NO back, being ignored by the sushi "chef", having portions of my order forgotten without so much as an apology, and being served sake in a bottle that has no pour-spout so when you try to pour it it spills all over the place. Please, tell me it's not just me!!! I suggest you eat your meals elsewhere. I will NOT be returning.

So glad we went to dinner here! I had the Rock Shrimp salad with Avocado...soooo good. My friend got the Screaming Orgasm, it was delicious ahi tuna with a great sauce. The table shared the Firecracker, Fried Tofu and Dynamite appetizers and those were awesome, too. The chef also made us a specialty roll with lobster, crab, wrapped in thin cucumber and it was delish. We met Sam, the owner, and he was very nice. The decor inside is very beautiful, all of the furniture is hand-made and the paintings on the wall can be purchased. Recommend for a great dinner!

I heard about Enso and tried it out, and it's already one of my favorite sushi restaurants in Bakersfield. I usually stay at a hotel downtown, but trek all the way down to Miyoshi in the southwest. No offense to Miyoshi (which is also excellent), but Enso is just as good and in the heart of the city to boot.
The only problem I had (really, very minor) was around ordering. I ordered a Caterpillar roll, and got a California roll instead. The waitress said that the chef doesn't speak much English, and he read "Caterpillar" as "California." I can't really fault him for that. His rolls were good and authentic, and that's what counts.
I highly recommend Enso Japanese Bar. Go there soon and tell your friends about it so their business grows and downtown doesn't lose another good restaurant. This one is a keeper!

My 1st thought was "I haven't had food like this since I moved up from L.A.!" The place is visually interesting, and service was excellent, but the real star was the food. Our party of six all loved our meals, and the artistic flair used in the presentation was certainly noticed by all.
If there is any complaint, its that the amazing Ahi dish has been given a name that is, frankly, a bit uncomfortable to use. I guess I can see how some might think its clever, or have a novelty factor but it was a real turn off for me and I nearly passed on the exquisite dish based on the name alone.
We work nearby and are pleased to have such an interesting new lunch option within walking distance. Enso is a welcome addition to the downtown food scene. We will be back!

I didn't become a sushi fan until a few years ago, but I feel like I have eaten my fair share of it since then and have become somewhat of a connoisseur. After being initially wowed by the exceptional design and decor of the restaurant, I was even more amazed by how great the sushi was. I have eaten at Enso several times now and am still enjoying sampling different dishes. All in all I'm glad to have such a great Japanese restaurant downtown.... we've been waiting for this a long time.
