Place is OK... Sometimes the food is GREAT sometimes, not so much... The drinks at the bar are a little expensive for what you get... But aside from that it's a cool place... The ambiance is cool, the service is usually very, very good... The food is problem... You never know if your going to get a home run... Or a bunt!!!

We ate here recently after a couple of bad experiences several years ago. (Very disappointing dinners two times in a row.)  The food has certainly improved. The food is above average. I also liked the ambiance and the service. Of course, it was a week night and we were the only diners, so the service would have to be good. I believe the reason that we were the only diners was that the prices are too high. I had a good filet mignon, but it wasn't as good as what I typically get at cafe Med, and it was more expensive (and I don't mean slightly more). My companion had a different dish, and said the same. Good--almost as good as you'd get at other top restaurants in town--but much more expensive.  We live on that side of town, so we would love to go back even if the food is not quite as good as at other top places. But after drinks, appetizers, and our dinners, we left there having spent around $30 more for a dinner we didn't enjoy as much as ones we have gotten at Cafe Med, Victor Victoria's, even the Hungry Hunter and Black Angus.  If it was the same price range, we'd deal with the food being a little less impressive because we like the room and the part of town. But at those prices?  We'll pay more for higher quality, but not lesser quality.

Their Tuscan Filet Mignon is exceptional.  It's not cheap but it is very good.
It was cooked properly and served with mashed potatos and vegetables.
It's unfortunate this place is not more crowded - - but it's definitely worth a visit.
The Butterfinger Pie dessert was also very good.
Try It.

St. Patrick's Day 2008--What a disappointment!!!!!!!
This restaurant boasted on the local news and in the Eye Street section of The Bakersfield Californian of being the "it" place for your Irish festivities complete with bagpipers, dancing, and authentic Irish cuisine. What they conveniently left out was the lazy staff, and fake, money-making owner Manny's need to smooth their utter need for business and lack of caring waitstaff for KGET news staff rather than assure all patrons are cared for. Manny thanked his lucky stars there was really anyone there. They didn't even have Guiness on TAP!!!!! UNFORGIVEABLE! Their menu was crap and overpriced...no one was there to begin with...it took over an hour to be seated and there wasn't a crowd to begin with. There should be something to say if this place has to have caller ID when you call for a reservation that you really didn't need in the first place--perhaps the creditors are who they should really answer to. Our waitress was ditzy; it took her 40 minutes to bring us our salads/soups/bread and only after staring a blazing hole in another waitstaff's face and raising our hands for service--there were a total of 3 waitresses, a sous chef and a head chef to serve three tables. The head chef talked most of the time he cooked on his cell phone, which we could clearly see from our table. The bagpiper played a total of three songs in the three hours we were there, not to mention wore the same IRISH tshirt from the 6am newscast. It smelled badly of water damage and dim lights were probably there to mask what you didn't want to see had made to your plate as a stowaway appetizer.
Another hour after ordering finally our food came to us. The corned beef had to be sent back because it was first of all a meager portion but most of all cold and unappetizing. The filet mignon was charred beyond recognition but still edible (better off going to Stuart Anderson's or Tahoe Joes). Don't pay $39 for the Tuscan Filet Mignon because it seriously wasn't worth it...the mashed potatoes were shoved under the bone of the filet and the veggies were drowned in olive oil they couldn't save you from a heart attack after eating this meal.
The Bangers and Mash seemed pretty reasonable and the chicken pasta seemed the only generous portion one in our party was able to enjoy.
The staff was completely moronic...after we were served the chef was putting on his jacket to leave, the waitress went to fold napkins and almost forgot to give us our check, then left before we could give her our money When we decided to leave she said goodbye before we could remind her we needed to pay. Plus, as we were leaving, they sectioned off the exit with someone's old science project backboard--GHETTO!!!!!
Nonetheless we paid and the waitress still didn't get that a 0 tip meant that she didn't get jack from us that night. I felt sorry for the cow who'd been massacred for my meal, the corned beef portion and the pig from which the bang from bangers and mash was from.
I wanted to start my profile just to inform Bakersfield and to anyone else reading this that this restaurant is utterly disgusting, revolting and slowly sinking in to the looming pit of bankruptcy.

One of Bakersfield's best in fine dining restaurants. The Tam is definately unique in ambience. There is no other restaurant in Bakersfield quite like it. Manny is also a gracious host and knows how to make his guests feel special. My wife and I have dined at the Tam several times, and the food and service are always outstanding. If your looking for a romantic place to take your lady, this is it.
Keep in mind that at 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, the dance floor gets kickin with good music. Lots of fun too!
Thumbs up to the Tam.

This restaurant deserves much better ratings than some have designated. Manny's Tam O' Shanter is one of the rare places in Bakersfield where you can enjoy fine dining in a romantic setting. There is no other place in town like the Tam. Manny and his staff go above and beyond to provide excellent customer service! As for the food...it is outstanding! My husband and I have dined at the Tam several times, and have always been completely satisfied with our meals. Occasionally we drop by the Tam on a Friday or Saturday night just to hear good music and a little dancing too. We have never had a bad experience. I hope this place is around for a long, long time.

I have not been back since we took my mom there on the Saturday night before Mother's Day two years ago. Only one other table was occupied when we arrived. Our waiter was simply horrible. He reminded me of the "My Big Fat Obnoxious Fiance" guy they had on TV several years ago. He was a jerk from the get go. It took a while for him to actually take our order. Then it took close to an hour to get our food. And like I said, there was only one other table occupied! When we finally received our food, mine was terrible. I had ordered orange chicken that came with shrimp. The chicken was a plain, unseasoned, boneless chicken breast with pieces of cold orange on it. The shrimp was cold shrimp with no flavoring on it whatsoever. While we "dined" a male customer was seated at the booth next to us. He had ordered lobster. Since it took so long to receive his order, he had to ask for it to go. I felt sorry for him. Lobster is not meant to be reheated.

When we were done with our "dinners", my mom and I waited for our free desserts that the waiter had said we would receive since we were celebrating Mother's Day. But instead, our waiter was sitting on the back of a booth talking to friends of his that decided to visit him while he was working. After I stared a hole in him, he finally came over to our table again and asked if we needed anything. I said we'd like to have our free dessert and he acted as if we didn't deserve them since we weren't happy with him thus far. Then when he brought them out, they were two pieces of Jello cheesecake with a gross lime sauce on them. I ate the "cheesecake" part after scraping off the green sauce and then I was ready to get our bill. This took waiting, again, several minutes, and my patience was running out. When the waiter finally returned he didn't say as much as a "thank you" or anything to us. He pretty much knew he wasn't getting much from us by way of tip and just didn't care about making us happy anymore. I will never go back and I have told several people about my experience.

It was not by any means fine dining.

Wanting to try a foreign cuisine I haven't had before, I went to Tam O'Shanter at someone's suggestion. They told me it was Scottish. Never having Scottish cuisine, I became excited like a child going to Disneyland.

The building itself, located on the East side, is unique with its own charm. Tam O'Shanter's Liquor store is also across the street. It too had a certain charm about it adding to the charm of the restaurant.

Upon walking in you notice the semi-old-world feel with wall-to-wall wood and brick. Having arrived for early lunch, we were the only ones there. Manny, the non-Scottish owner, seated us and was very hospitable. I couldn't help but think I was dining in a restaurant in New York were the restaurant owners add a personal touch by playing host and engaging the customers in conversation; I like Manny.

Our waitress presented the menu along with the lunch specials. The lunch special consisted of nothing more than traditional sandwiches with fries or salad. Forget sandwiches, I was there for a taste of Scotland. I immediately dismissed the specials and opened up the menu and soon became disappointed. The menu did not consist of mostly Scottish fare but a mix of Irish and steakhouse menu items. Now, that is not to take away from the quality of food but I expected more.

I ordered something I’ve never had, Bangers and Mash, a traditional IRISH dish at $20. Others in my party had the Grilled Corn Beef ($20) and the Pan Seared Lamb Chops ($40).

While waiting for our meal we were served bread with colored butter. It was not flavored as I would have expected from a colored butter. Apparently, bread is only served with the meal in the evening time. I guess we were the exception. However, we were served bread after someone in our group ordered the stuffed pastries at a whopping $14.95 for 4 small pieces. She was a little disappointed.

During this wait for the meal, I took some time to explore the restaurant on the way to the men’s room. It is much larger than it appears. In the back is Club Tam, a bar where they have nightlife on Friday’s and Saturday’s. From what the menu says, it appears it is geared towards an older crowd – no problem.

After a somewhat long patient wait, we were served. I received mine. It looked to be nothing special but what can you expect of a traditional Irish dish? While the lamb chops did appear to be presented well, I would not pay $40 for lamb chops. The Grilled Corn Beef was in HEAVY portion with a side of mash and one-quarter cut cabbage. While I did not try the corn beef, the person that had said it was the best they’ve had outside of Washington D.C.

My Bangers and Mash was good. The 2 medium sized sausages were lightly seasoned. I started to taste the seasoning towards the end and enjoyed it. The mashed potatoes were okay and were topped with regular beef gravy. Again, I would say this dish does not warrant such a heavy price tag of $20 for mashed potatoes and sausage. It wasn’t until I left that I realized I was not given the leeks that come with the entrée – too late.

Manny came over to the table at the end of the meal and played good host as he had done with other tables that were seated after us. He definitely gave it a personal feel. I got the sense Manny spends a lot of time at the restaurant and puts his heart into it.

While I would again visit, it would only be once more for dinner to check out the night feel. This place would be good for a first date. It has ambience along with charm and a friendly host. Do you have to absolutely try this restaurant? No. But, if you want something different, this might be the place for you. You should expect to fork out over a hundred dollars on date. It’s not a restaurant for lunch and this probably hurts business. It being out of the way doesn’t help either. I would love to see this concept elsewhere in town with an affordable menu and a focus on Scottish fare as the name Tam O'Shanter implies. I had trouble reviewing the site because of this.

I don't know what restaurant the other reviewers went to, but the Tam O' Shanter that we ate at was not the same one my wife and I ate at. We decided to go at the last minute and were worried we might have a long wait. We were surprised when we arrived on a Friday night at 7:00 pm and there was one couple in the whole restaurant. Usually not a very good sign, we later discovered why. Don't bother, the food is incredibly mediocre for the price and the service was terrible.

Simply AMAZING. Manny was a delightful addition to our lunch. Try the Tam burger with the special sauce it was killer, we had heard it was the best burger in town and the rumors were true! The burger was of a vacation gourmet resort caliber. It wasnt that busy during the lunch hour so its a great place when you feel like taking a venture. It definately did not feel like we were in bakersfield, thats for sure!

If your looking for a great dining experience and great food The Tam O Shanter is the place to get it. The drive from the Southwest is worth it. Nightlife is great, music by Bakersfields best bands and Dj's. This is a must for the intimate setting for anybody. Thumbs Up on the Tam O Shanter.

I agree with all the other reviews. There are many restaurants in town but none that will give you the truly fine dining experience that Manny's does. Manny is a very gracious host and the environment is very romantic and impressive. We have been there many times and never had any complaint about either the food or service. They are both excellent. It is unfortunate that Pete Tittl's friendship with T.L. Maxwell caused him to give Manny's are so-so review. It deserves much better as evidenced by the other reviews posted. It is truly a five star restaurant.

I recommend this place to anyone looking for a fun night out with friends or family.
A lovely restaurant with a pleasant ambience, good lighting, and spacious tables and seating accomodations. The place itself was very clean and tidy. It was mid-day, and the temperature inside the place was cool.
The food is excellent! There is a bar and extensive beverage selection; but I'm not a big drinker, so I was recommended a no-alcohol fruity concoction. (I don't recall what it's called, but I certainly enjoyed it!)

I completely agree with the other reviewers... The Tam O' Shanters atmosphere is like no other in town. I have had the chance to eat quite a few different items from both the lunch and dinner menus and have yet to be dissapointed. I've got to give it up to Manny as well for being one of the most charasmatic and generous hosts in town.

As far as atmosphere goes, there is no where else like the Tam O' Shanter in town. The architecture and dim lighting create a mafia/ rat pack type feel. The menu is a bit on the pricy side but well worth it if you're looking for a romantic night out. I have to say that this place has one of the best filets in town. The wait staff is usually friendly and attentive and I don't think I've been there once when Manny didn't come and personally greet me. This place is a must-try!

If you are looking for a swank, quiet place to have lunch this is absolutely your place! Dark and relaxing are the words that best come to mind for their atmosphere... as well as romantic or highly professional if you are in the mood to talk or pitch. Service is always great, especially when greeted on a regular occasion by Manny himself. The food is amazing and everything I've ever had has sent my taste buds into overdrive!!! VERY TASTY and a special treat for that special someone.
Be ready though... this will will make a severe dent in your checkbook (especially for lunch), food/drinks/dessert will probably run you in the $50-60/range... but well worth it if you"re in the mood.
save this one for those special occasions, and enjoy!
